July 8, 2003 - San Antonio, TXForecast: 92 degrees. Road Condition: Smooth on 285 South, and with minimal services to Pecos. Interstate 10 East to San Antonio was in good condition. Fuel: Super Unleaded $1.69 Miles Traveled: Roswell, NM – San Antonio, TX: 534 (Total: 2,706) Bike Update: Running Good! Road Trip Log Update: We got an early start to the day as we saw the sun rise over Roswell, NM. Ironman finally got to visit the infamous land of Area 51. The town looked ready for tourist after hosting a huge annual gathering of UFO followers the previous week. The city of Roswell even decorated the light post with alien eyes. We had a quick nap in the town of Loving, New Mexico and then moved on for the long stretch to San Antonio. Crossing the New Mexico & Texas border the welcome sign said, “Welcome to Texas…. Drive Friendly!” What a change from LA! Along the route we were escorted by large groups of colorful butterflies and soaring hawks. We watched storm clouds create a calico sky of black, grey, and white. We had successfully avoided the thundershowers one more day. As we approached San Antonio we were greeted by huge clouds with a rainbow coming through and a half moon in the background. As the sun went down the lightening strikes lit up the sky about 30 miles in the distance. The day was full of interesting scenery and was a perfect day to ride. Our seventh day of being on the road felt like it was made just for us, but after almost 2600 miles we are ready to take a day off. The NAA (National Auctioneers Association) Conference and Show (www.auctioneers.org) will be a 4 day “pit stop” before venturing out once again.
